Sweetheart Dance, The Today Show, NYC
Some Thoughts on Enduring Love
By Ira Lippke
I’m always asked what I love most about my job, and the answer is usually witnessing the beauty of two people launching on the adventure of life together. Last week I was fortunate to be able to shoot a special Valentine’s sweetheart dance for the Today show that celebrated an entirely different kind of beauty: the lasting love of 41 couples who had been married for more than 50 years. Staged in the great hall of Cipriani’s new venue at 25 Broadway by our friends at The Knot, the event was a tribute to couples who have woven their lives together in partnerships based on patience, forgiveness, humor and a distinctly enduring chemistry.
Gratitude was a theme that emerged over and over again in the moving vows couples wrote for each other. “I know I always like to walk around like the proud rooster of the hen house,” said one smitten husband, “but I really know it was always you. For two dumb kids we really came out shining… I love you and I will only close my life with you.”
Now that’s beauty.
