Lexie & Robbie, Gulls Way, Malibu, CA
How did you meet? What were your first impressions of each other?
Lexie: We met in Aspen during the summer of 2009. Robbie was living there at the time and I was on vacation with my family. Our parents had been friends for years and heard both of us were going to UPenn and thought we should meet. We had a joint family dinner and immediately hit it off. I vividly remember Robbie driving over on a Vespa to my hotel the next day to hang out. He was so cute with big, red curly hair and immediately wanted to leave with me and take me on an adventure.
Robbie: I actually went skiing with Lexie’s dad a few years before we met. He showed me a picture of Lexie – I thought she was beautiful! We finally met a few years later when she visited Aspen. We had a big family dinner and then I came over the next day. She was laying by the pool in a white bikini, standard Lexie.
What part of wedding planning did you most enjoy?
Both: In general, all our wedding planning trips to visit our wedding planner, Mindy Weiss, in California couldn’t have been more enjoyable! She is the sweetest person and incredible to work with – she truly makes planning a wedding so fun and easy. Choosing her as our wedding planner was one of the best decisions we made.
Lexie: More specifically though, the first tent/flower mock up reveal was definitely our favorite (with our food tasting at a close second favorite!). We had many previous meetings with Mindy and our florist, Marks Garden, where I explained my vision for the flowers for all the wedding events but specifically for the wedding day down to every small detail. When they presented the mock-up, all of it came to life – it was incredible and magical.
What was the most difficult wedding planning decision you made?
Both: Where to get married! We were looking for somewhere in the US, that was outside with beautiful greenery and scenery and that could accommodate a large amount of guests! We looked at hundreds of outside venues online, narrowed it down to a select few and then found the most beautiful, perfect venue at a private estate in Malibu, CA. It was exactly what we were looking for.
Did you learn anything about yourself or each other throughout the planning process?
Both: Well, we’ve known eachother since we were 18, so we don’t think we learned anything that was totally new. From the beginning we made sure to listen to each other, to know what was most important to the other in the process, and to never get too caught-up. Wedding planning can obviously be stressful but at the end of the day, you’re marrying your best friend and that’s the most important thing to remember through it all.
Is there a moment from your day that stands out the most?
Lexie: Saying our vows under our beautiful chuppa in front of all our family and friends was such a special, incredible moment. Looking into Robbie’s eyes and declaring my love and promise for the future as his wife had me overwhelmed with emotion. Then hearing his beautiful words in return – I knew it was the start to an incredible marriage and life together. It’s a moment that we’ll both never forget. The second would be our first dance! Robbie and I both love country music and decided to pick a non-traditional first dance song, “Loving You Easy” by the Zac Brown Band. I wanted our dance to be fun yet romantic. We had the best time dancing for the first time as husband and wife in front of all the people we love most in the world.
Robbie: Seeing Lexie for the first time right before we were about to be married – hard to put that feeling into words. She was stunning, truly breathtaking. And then again when we first saw each other on the aisle – overwhelmed with emotion that the day had finally arrived and this was the first day officially spending forever with my best friend. Also memorable was our after-after party. At around 1 AM we handed out headphones to all the guests and turned our after party into a silent disco. We weren’t sure how people were going to respond but it was a huge hit and the party went on for another 2 hours. It was incredible and such a fun and different way to end the best night of our lives!
