About Rebecca Walker
Steeped by education and experience in the ethos of the Magnum photographers, Rebecca Walker brings an emotional, visually elegant style to her wedding work for Ira Lippke Studios. Whether shooting alone or playing off the fashion-forward approach of her husband and photography partner Jason, Rebecca’s images are unforgettable elegies to the day’s events.
Rebecca grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts, living vicariously through the slide shows and stories her parents told of their years living as a young married couple in Africa. Picking up her first camera at age 10, she spent her high school years developing her interest in photography both alone and with her best friend.
Seeking an international experience, Rebecca went to the University of the Nations, where she took an intensive three-month photography class in Kona, Hawaii, and was exposed to renowned photographers from National Geographic and the Los Angeles Times. It was during this time that she fell in love with photojournalism and learned the intricacies of shooting and developing black and white film. While spending a semester in Lausanne, Switzerland, Rebecca met her future husband and fellow photographer Jason Walker.
After getting married and moving to Georgia, she attended the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where she was exposed to the work of Sally Mann, Mary Ellen Mark and James Nachtwey—all of whom influenced her own style of emotionally provocative documentary photography. During her last year at SCAD, Rebecca had a three-month internship in New York at the renowned Magnum photo agency and worked with photographer Bruce Davidson. She graduated in 2005 with an award for Highest Academic Achievement.
Moving to New York in 2006, Rebecca worked at the magazine PDN and was responsible for organizing PhotoPlus Expo, considered one of the most important photo industry events in the country. Leaving PDN to pursue her own documentary work, Rebecca began concentrating on shooting weddings, first independently and then through Ira Lippke Studios. In the November 2011 issue of PDN, she and Jason were featured as “Wedding Photography Rising Stars.” In addition to weddings, Rebecca enjoys shooting children—a lifelong interest that has increased with the birth of her daughter Logan and son Elijah.
